Глава 6: Настоящая дружба
Со временем Пятнашка заметил, что остальные лошади стараются не общаться с ним, не замечают его. Он попытался выяснить, почему к нему так относятся, и услышал, что его считают изгоем, вот и держатся поодаль.
«Даже твои родители не верят, что ты так низко пал», — сказали ему. И когда он захотел узнать, что же именно сделал неправильно, старшие объяснили, что ему не стоило дружить с животными, которые ниже по рангу, поскольку лошади являются самыми достойными и должны говорить только на своём языке.
Пятнашке не следовало даже разговаривать с теми, кто не равны ему по социальному статусу, — овцами, коровами, курами и вообще всеми птицами, особенно ласточками, у которых нет своего дома, которые всегда скитаются и находят приют там, где лучше погода.
«Ещё одна твоя ошибка, — медленно, как ребёнку, объяснял ему один конь, — заключается в том, что ты слушаешь, как читают и повторяют раз за разом архаичные, устаревшие книги. Нужно жить в современном мире, а не следовать непонятным уже ритуалам и изучать сказки. Если ты поймёшь, что это неправильно и изменишь своё поведение, то твои родители и все остальные лошади вновь начнут общаться с тобой как с другом».
Пятнашку больно ранило такое отношение, но он не собирался отказываться от новой компании, от любви к книгам и от историй из Библии. Ему всё это нравилось, и он не мог понять, почему считают неправильным то, что радует его и никому не приносит вреда. Всех животных он считал своей семьёй — даже малюток-ласточек, но многое знали и видели, были самыми добрыми и дружелюбными. Ему нравилось беседовать с ними, и часто он приглашал их, как и всех других обитателей фермы, разделить с ним трапезу.

Chapter 6: True Friendship
As time went by, Spots noticed the rest of the horses distancing themselves from him, refusing even to acknowledge his presence. When he tried to find out why, he was told the horses felt that he was contaminated and if they came near him, they too could become tainted.
“Even your parents,” he was told “cannot believe you have stooped so low.” When he still failed to comprehend what he did wrong, an older horse explained to him that he was considered soiled through his interaction with lower-class animals. “A horse belongs to the highest animal order and should only talk in horse language. He should never associate himself with the other animals who are all below his social status—the sheep, cows, hens, and birds of all kinds, especially swallows, who don’t have a permanent home and forever wander, exchanging one home for another as weather dictates. Another mistake you are making,” continued the horse, preaching with self-assurance and in a slow manner as if explaining to a slow-witted child, “is listening to old archaic books being read and reread, time, after time, after time. One must live in the present times and not follow some old backward rituals designed to keep humanity in the dark ages, and feed them with pretty fairy tales. If you gave up those behaviors,” the old horse explained, “your parents and the rest of the horses said they will consider talking to you and being your friends again.”
Spots was hurt by the unfriendly attitudes of his fellow horses but he refused to give up his new friends or his love for books, or his listening to the stories of the Bible. He liked his friends and enjoyed the stories he heard. He could not understand how something that made him happy and did not harm others could be bad. He felt all animals were his family. Though the barn swallows were the smallest of his friends, he found them wise and well-traveled, having the biggest and most welcoming hearts. He enjoyed his conversations with the swallows and often invited them, as well as the other barn animals, to share his food.
