Глава 10, чaсть – 1: Гонка начинается

Баран, «замаскированный» под человека, уселся на козлы, не стал натягивать вожжи, закрыл глаза и внезапно понял, что может молиться. Он не знал, к кому обращаться и как, но начал молитву.
Раздался звук выстрела — гонка началась. Пятнашка держался в середине, не стремясь в лидеры, поскольку хотел сберечь силы для рывка на финальной дистанции. Он чувствовал, что хорошо подготовился, а ещё его подгоняли мысли о любимом фермере и царе Давиде из Библии, который победил гиганта Голиафа. Тем временем мчавшиеся кони толкали друг друга, борясь за лучшее место, и постепенно повозки исчезли из вида, углубившись в тёмный лес.
Когда наступил вечер, многие участники гонки остановились и устроились на отдых, поскольку перестали видеть дорогу. Пятнашка же обратился к ласточкам на их языке и попросил найти самый безопасный путь к тропе в горах, а сам воспользовался передышкой. Птички вернулись через два часа и, летая высоко над лесом, направили его по кратчайшему пути в горы — так, чтобы ему не встретились ни волчьи логова, ни установленные охотниками ловушки.
Пятнашка не спешил из осторожности, но когда наступил рассвет, оказался далеко впереди всех остальных. Хотя его мышцы и суставы болели от усталости, он знал, что не должен останавливаться. Ведь евреи скитались 40 лет по пустыне, бежали от армии фараона, перешли через море и вступили в бой с амалекитами. Пятнашке же требовалось потерпеть всего три дня, и он напоминал себе, что это совершенно несравнимый срок.
Вдруг впереди раздался грохот, такой сильный, что многие кони заржали и прижались к земле. Пятнашка же сохранял спокойствие. Вспомнив наставления Самсона, он попытался решить, что стало причиной этого звука, и попросил ласточек полететь и всё разведать. Те вернулись, рассказав, что дорогу полностью перекрыла лавина, и предложили ему отдохнуть, пока они поищут обход. Пятнашка улёгся на обочине, а когда мимо него начали пробегать другие кони, он предупреждал их об опасности, но никто к нему не прислушивался.
У первого из них на повозке был номер 67. Это был Даг из прежнего табуна, который превратился в прекрасного вороного жеребца, в четыре раза больше, нежели сам Пятнашка.
— Даг! — закричал он. — Это же ты?
Тот остановился на мгновение, а затем ответил голосом, в котором звенел металл: «Я никому не помогаю. Мне нужно победить в гонке».
Несмотря на такую отповедь, Пятнашка сказал мягко и по-дружески: «Мне не нужна помощь! Я лишь хочу предупредить, что впереди дороги нет. Ты слышал грохот? Это была лавина. Ты не сможешь проложить себе путь, так что давай поищем другой».

Chapter 10, Part – 1: The Race Begins
The disguised sheep sat in the cabin of the carriage and left the reins loose. He closed his eyes and suddenly discovered he could pray. The sheep did not know to whom or how to pray but pray he did.
The sound of fired cannon announced the start of the race. Spots began the race in the middle of the pack. He was conserving his energy for the final stretch of the competition. He felt well-trained and was spurred on by images of his beloved Farmer, and King David from the Bible who beat the giant Goliath. The galloping horses pushed and shoved one another, jostling for better position in the procession of runners. Slowly the carriages disappeared from sight, entering the dark woods.
As night fell, many of the horses had to stop and rest as they could not see the road. Spots, on the other hand, called on the swallows in their language. He asked them to find the safest path to the mountain trail while he took a short nap. The swallows returned after 2 hours, and flying high above the forest, directed Spots along the shortest path to the mountain trail—making sure to avoid the wolves’ dens and hunting grounds. Slowly and carefully Spots progressed and when daybreak came he found himself far ahead of the pack. Although his muscles and joints ached for rest, he knew he had to push on. The Jews walked 40 years through the desert, were pursued by the army of the Pharaoh, passed through the sea, and survived the attack of the Amalekites. Spots only needed three days. This was nothing in comparison, he reminded himself.
Spots continued running when he heard a rumbling sound ahead in the distance. It was so loud and scary that many horses neighed and fell to the ground at the sound of that noise. He kept his cool. Based on Samsons’ teachings, he attempted to review the different causes for the sound and asked the swallows to fly ahead and raconteur. The swallows flew ahead and informed Spots that the road was completely blocked by an avalanche and asked him to rest while they sought an alternative path. He laid down by the side of the path, and as other horses approached, he advised them of the avalanche but none listened to him. The first horse that he saw had the number 67 on its carriage. He recognized the horse as Dag, the horse from his old herd. Dag, a beautiful black stallion, was four times bigger than Spots.
“Dag!” cried out Spots, “Is it you?” Dag stopped for a moment, and then said, in a cold metallic voice, “I am not helping anyone. I need to win the race!”
