Вашингтон. С такой просьбой обратились на днях сенаторы-демократы к видным представителям еврейских организаций на ежегодной встрече, организованной членами сенатского Комитета по связям с общественностью и Национальным еврейским демократическим Советом.
Основные выступающие – сенаторы Карл Левин (Мичиган) и Бен Кардин (Мерилэнд) просили помочь с двумя проблемами, вставшими перед Обамой: защитить от обвинений в нелояльности к Израилю, к его готовности «утопить» Израиль и помочь с согласованием бюджета.
Участники встречи констатируют, что ощущали прессинг: если вы хотите сохранить Медикейд, иные программы по охране здоровья, программы помощи неимущим и гранты на программы по укреплению безопасности США, помогите провести согласование бюджета с республиканцами.
Многие представители еврейских организаций осознают, что несогласованный бюджет прежде всего ударит по нуждам членов их общин, пожилых и больных. Поэтому и готовы на компромиссы.
В то же время присутствующими было высказано мнение, что можно и нужно сокращать все статьи бюджета, в том числе и на Медикейд, но это не единственный способ сохранения баланса.
Левин и Кардин признали, что критика Обамы за его рекомендации Израилю отойти к границам 1967 г. справедлива, но обвинения в том, что Обама якобы готов «подарить» палестинцам территории Израиля и не думает о его безопасности, не соответствуют действительности. Кроме того, такие слухи, как и те, что Обама финансирует ХАМАС, подрывают позиции Обамы в его противодействии инициации ПА в ООН о признании ее самостоятельным государством.
На этой встрече впервые за многие годы проблемам Израиля было отведено очень незначительное время. Главным было согласование бюджета и иные внутриамериканские проблемы.

As far as Israel interests concerned…..I have no idea why people are surprised a Jeremmiah Wright/Bill Ayres/George Soros disciple would NOT be an ideal POTUS. Even the military cooperation has gone ahead DESPITE Obama, not because of him.

In terms of debt ceiling, unfortunately a default would be catastrophic, so Tea Partiers need to get a clue. BUT…if Barry Alinsky Soetoro wants AIPAC help, how about a squadron of F-35/F-22 and an Ohio class submarine or two sent Israel’s way at discount price? Quid pro quo.

У меня создалось впечатление, что при всей сложности согласования бюджета, Обама педалирует именно болевые для многих точки — Медикейд, Медикэр, SS пенсии, пенсии и зарплаты воинам-ветеранам, теперь добавили вопросы с пенсионными планами 401K. Интересно, что республиканцы предлагали сокращения бюджета по всем категориям, но не педалировали исключительно на эти категории расходов, а Обама хочет представить республиканцев виноватыми… Это прочитывается и просматривается во всех его последних публичных выступлениях. Он к компромиссу готов, а «плохиши» — республиканцы — нет. А в самом деле, республиканцы настаивают на немедленном сокращении государственного аппарата, на расходах на него. Об этом Обама ни разу не говорил. Не готов он к этому.
И еще, если говорить о помощи Израилю со стороны США, то как расценить решение США поставить разработанную Израилем систему противоракетной обороны «Железный купол», которую США очень хвалят, сознавая и признавая вслух на весь мир, что только Израиль смог создать такую мощную и эффективную систему арабским(!) соседям Израиля — союзникам США. Союзникам США,не имеющим даже дипломатических отношений с Израилем. Так кого от кого «Железный купол» будет защищать на Ближнем Востоке? А заставлять перед всем миром премьер-министра дружественного государства втиснуться в габариты, поперечный размер которых равен половине ширины Washington Beltway!? Именно это и рекомендует Обама Израилю — втиснуться в границы 1967 г. Нетаниягу упирался… и сдался. Это мы уже знаем из информации Микаэла Орена, посла Израиля в США. Так друзья поступают? 1. Obama is no dummy. He is a formiddable opponent, even at a young age, I knew he would beat both Hillary and McCain who at first didn’t take him seriously. So Obama’s success in making Republicans look like the BAD guys — despite the terrible state of the economy under his watch, mind you…. if further proof of his political skills & ability to manipulate the process. Obama will stop at nothing to get re-elected. When GOP stops underestimating him and stop fighting each other (GOP Establishment vs. Tea Party), then they will have a shot at stopping the Obama agenda.
2. That said… historically the true conservative GOP have been AGAINST all the New Deal/quasi-socialist programs like Medicare, SS, collective bargaining, etc. Tea Party is no different. Even the Paul Ryan Plan would entail significant cuts and employs fuzzy math in calculating the 10-year savings (though again, both parties use all kinds of economic tricks). So at least on the surface, Obama’s job in showing that GOP is willing to risk default to enrich the pockets of billonaires, is not that difficult. The media will certainly be on Obama’s side in this emotion-charged debate. Most polls show that Obama’s tactics are starting to work, unfortunately.
3. Don’t think ‘Iron Dome’ is end all be all defensive system. It’s also very expensive far more than the proven Nautilus laser for short-range rockets. Israel would need 20+ Iron Dome batteries to deal with missile onslaught of Hezbollah and HAMAS alone…integrated with Magic Wand system which won’t be ready for another 2-3 years….as well as Patriot PAC-3, Arrow-2, plus the future Arrow-3 when it’s ready…. to even have a shot in absorbing the blows from Syria, Iran. And even then, it would have be coordinated with American anti-missile layers AND most importantly one would have to pray that Iran is not nuclear because if only one missile gets through to Tel Aviv— even if intercepted over Israel — it’s over. Best defense is offense of course. Israel would need nothing short of regime change in Iran in order to stop its nuclear program and «protect» the neighboring Arab states.
About 12 B. revenue and 34-37 B. spending every month. This need Bill Klinton with his advisers.

Spending money on AIDS in Africa is not only a highly moral thing to do, but it advances important scientific/medical research involving immune systems, genetics verging into Nano — i.e. its breakthroughs will ultimately benefit the Western people in big ways — not to mention buys us some decent amount of goodwill in the world. Read: the less hated the US is abroad, the easier it is to do good business in those countries. That’s how charity acts as a form of (long-term) investment. Besides, the amounts we’re talking about is truly miniscule relatively speaking. Even George W. Bush knew that; he actually was arguably the president who’s done the most in AIDS research of any POTUS.

No, it’s basically a form of INSURENCE, a giant bribe to the Pakistani Military Junta (and its business elite that, incidentally, pays no taxes — yay, if low taxes were the answer as Tea Party claims, Pakistan and other banana republic kleptocracies would be world-class economies…but I digress).
And you know what? Before the Great Recession, that Pakistani aid amount, while on the surface grotesquely large, represented what less than 1/20th of 1 % of our GDP?
It certainly beats the ALTERNATIVE: Pakistan falls to Taliban and/or is forced to dump a few nukes on the black-market where it’s picked up by Al-Qaeda, Hugo Chavez, or funneled all the way to Iran’s sleeper cell… and some time later ends up being detonated in a middle of Wall-Street, Manhatten, Hollywood, DT Chicago, Las Vegas or insert other strategic & cultural center of the Big Satan…… sending not just America but entire world (economy) into veritable Depression with financial damage alone measured in TRILLIONS longer term…
Or, not giving another billion to Mubarak so that he could keep 30 year peace with Israel — can you imagine with today’s weapons, what a real Middle Eastern war of attrition would look like today and what it would do to oil prices alone? Again, we’re talking 100s of billions if not trillion dollar damage to the West here….. Not to mention, with Soviet Union still around, at some point Egypt would have invited their their advisors back and probably would have stationed a few of their nukes to be lobbed at Israel…. I’d say that 30 year peace, no matter how impermanent it was going to be in the end, was a huge BARGAIN not just for America but for Israel, allowing it to breath a sigh of relief and build its high-tech economy — do you think if the state of hostilities with Egypt was still ongoing, the Microsofts, Intels of this world would have been investing billions into Israeli economy?

Будем молиться за Израиль, как Вы предлагаете, чтобы Иран не стал в полной мере ядерной державой. И трудно не согласиться, что лучшая защита — это нападение. Хотя здесь велик риск. И вряд ли пойдет на это правительство Нетаниягу, даже если иногда и «пугает» таким развитием событий. И понятно, что Израиль нуждается не только в Iron Dome.
Что касается Обамы и республиканцев. К сожалению, его манипуляции работают. И все последние опросы свидетельствуют: большинство американцев сейчас обвиняют в несговорчивости и даже в несерьезном и безответственном подходе республиканцев в связи с пугающим дефолтом. Обама уже даже в помощь и Рейгана «призвал»…
Но, судя по вчерашним передачам на Fox, эта тема была главной, и много экспертов выступали. Высказывали предположение — надежду, что своим правом вето Обама все же не воспользуется по плану, предлагаемому «Gang of six», близкому к предложениям республиканцев. Правда, Обама здесь говорит о том, что их предложения близки к идеям демократов. Что ж — тем лучше, если наметился компромисс — конструктивный — избежим дефолта. Ближайшие дни покажут.
О пользе помощи Египту у меня сомнений нет — ради Израиля. О борьбе со СПИДом в африканских странах, поиске необходимых медикаментов, вакцинации, учитывая, что наш «шарик земной» маленький, это действительно необходимо.
А операции в Ливии, где любой режим бандитский, антиамериканский, антизападный, на мой взгляд, неоправданны.

1. Sadly, I am not surprised the country is blaming Republicans. First of all, there are more Democrats than true, conservative republicans, anyway, for demographic and ideological reasons. Hispanics really swung the balance toward Dems last couple of decades. Even Bush only got elected because Al Gore & John Kerry were such clumsy, uncharismatic losers. Whereas Obama even when he’s admittedly weakened by a truly terrible economy, by 3-4 war theatres, remains a pretty smooth, clever political operator.
2. GOP badly misread their 2010 Congressional Election triumph as some kind of almost divine MANDATE: when in fact, the country was still divided badly, the Republican brand was still UNpopular according to polls, and only lack of enthusiasm on part of liberals & switching of otherwise independents disillusioned with Obama’s unfullfilled Messianic promise, left the door open for Karl Rove and Co. to craft an effective electio narrative —-helped no doubt by the poor timing/PR message of Obamacare & controversial Citizens United Suprem Court decision and….. but I digress.
3. Karl Rove in a rare moment of candor even admitted that Christine O’Donnell kooks of this world cost him the Senate, so this isn’t some novel idea: Republican Establishment aka the ‘Grown-Ups’ had a chance to put Tea Party under control and use its fundamentalist energy WITHOUT allowing it to dictate strategy or policy…. but they failed — and now the short-sighted extremists are threatening to kill the GOP brand for good if the country defaults and/or people riot when their SS, Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment, etc are profoundly threatened longer-term.
4. When it comes to Iran….honestly I don’t know. There is SO many unknowns here, so much existential risk for Israel, so much of disinformation involved…. some say Ahmadinejad is a Rotschild/Illuminati puppeet and it’s all Rhetoric. Some say, Russia and China already made sure Iran has nukes in case Israel does the impossible and singlehandedly destroys their (well dispersed, redundant, underground) nuclear programs. Etc, etc, etc. All I know is: Iran’s (and Pakistan’s and North Korea’s) nuclear program would have been much easier to deal with in 2001-2002-2003 than today. The West blew a golden chance to defeat its sworn enemies post-9/11. So much effort instead, was wasted on impotent Saddam. Sigh.
5. Lybia is just weird. Qaddafi threatened TPTB with his Golden Dinar idea and his enormous underground water reservoirs surely were attractive…. too bad non-American NATO partners were so incomptent, so short on ammunition that Qaddafi survived the initial onslaught. That’s when Lybian war became a big liability, financial and poolitical for Obama. Fools.

But see that’s the thing: most of that aid negotiated by Jimmy Carter wasn’t so much for Israel’s sake — he’s not our biggest fan — but rather a big bribe to keep the peace in the strategic oil heart of the Western world, including the shipping choke-point Suez & to swing the Egyptian dictatorship away from Soviet sphere of influence (and after the USSR demise, from aligning with Shia Iran or China-Russia interests).
And it’s worked for, what, 33-34 years now. And you know what? Moreover, if Mubarak wasn’t such a selfish short-sighted corrupt-nik, he could have wisely transferred power to his son, Suleiman, Marshall Tantawi or some combination of military-busiess elite council say 3-4 years ago, when Egyptian economy was growing at what, 7 or 8 %…. and retired happily ever after in Sharm e-Sheikh or whatever on Red Sea wallowing in grotesque luxury the 50 billion he had pillfered from his people would have affored him. Had he done that, it’s possible the the Arab Spring chaos might have been mitigated or even averted, with Revolution-instigating moderate/secular/young Egyptiians sufficiently pacified, thus keeping Muslim Brotherhood away for another 10 years…
I mean, Mubarak knew he was old and was dying of cancer years ago. His egomania screwed a lot of Western interests in the end. Too bad…but even so, I don’t think it changes the fact that US aid to Egypt has been a tremendeous bargain for both US and Israel.

While I recognize how valuable Mubarak has been for both Israel AND United States —and indeed the rest of the world economy by keeping some semblance of peace in the region….. I cannot feel sorry for him — anymore than I can feel sorry for Qaddafi, Pinochet, Saddam, Adi Amin, Putin, Shah Reza Pahlavi, King Abdullah Hussein I, Hafez al-Assad, Sukharno or any other murdering, thieving, torturing scumbag of a dictator.
Everyone dropped the ball here. Mubarak. CIA. Mossad. George W. Obama. Olmert. Netanyahu. Not only should they have seen the writing on the wall, but Tunisia gave them a grave warning 2-3 week prior. And they did nothing of substance to prepare, being extremely reactionary throughout rather than proactive.
Then again, maybe it does lend credence to a (conspiracy) theory that this game of Revolutionary Domino was planned during Dubya administration and that both secular-moderates AND Muslims Brotherhood are being fiendishly co-opted & exploited by the Westestern imperialist forces — in a way not too dissimilar from the way British nurtured & utilized MB them back in 1940s for their own geopolitical purposes.

Hence my dismay at even possibility of, say, Ron Paul being in charge.
