KINGS RACE

This book is dedicated to all the little angels of this world. May you light the sky with your kindness and love, and be a beacon of light and peace for the world.

Chapter 2: The Selection

One day Spots overheard his father speak to an assembly of the herd, which had convened in the barn to select the horses to be trained and represent the herd in the next King’s Race.

“Unfortunately, my son Spots has been a disappointment to me and my wife. As you have all noticed due to his size, spots, and sensitive personality, he will not be able to participate and win the King’s Race. I, ahem ahem (he cleared his throat), that is we, truly apologize for Spots’ shortcomings and would have to carry our shame as a grave stain on our long line of famous King’s Race winners.”

Hearing this, Spots burst into the stable with tears streaming from his big dark eyes. Interrupting his father’s address to the counsel he said:

“Why? I can train and win the race and bring the herd the honor it deserves. I don’t see how having a gentle and kind heart can adversely affect my powers to compete.”

chapter-2-2

“Quiet!” thundered his father, who was upset at his son’s lack of manners. Spots eavesdropped, interrupted him, and entered a counsel where only the elders were permitted to convene. “You cannot compete and lose! Each herd is allowed to select only two horses and you are too small, which means you have shorter legs and thus a shorter stride, not to mention you are covered with spots and have a weak heart. No spotted horse has ever competed ーnot to mention won — the King’s Race in the past.” In a softer voice he added, somewhat apologetically, «These weaknesses, disadvantages, call them whatever you may, are handicaps that would prevent you from winning. We can’t take a chance of losing, my son.» Atlas turned his face from Spots and sighed.

The selection was made: Dag and Tony, two beautiful tall and strong black stallions were chosen from the herd. Dag and Tony happened to also be twins and looked almost identical if it wasn’t for a scar on Tony’s right ear, a bite mark from his brother Dag during one of their quarrels. Spots congratulated Dag and Tony and wished them much success. They thanked him but were too jubilant to notice his grief.
